The roux-en-y gastric bypass is an effective form of weight loss surgery that is distinct from the gastric sleeve in many ways. Whilst the sleeve requires the bariatric surgeon completely remove up to 80% of the stomach, the bypass involves a technique which restructures the stomach entirely.
Like the sleeve gastrectomy, a gastric bypass requires patients to have a minimum BMI of at least 35. The procedure is performed to limit the chance of developing potentially life-threatening health conditions that are related to obesity. These include heart disease, cancer, stroke, sleep apnea, and gastroesophageal reflux disease amongst others. Also known as comorbidities, these conditions can be detrimental to the quality of life, and the roux-en-y gastric bypass is designed to help relieve those. Typically, gastric bypass patients can expect to lose up to 70% of their excess weight.
