What Does Gastric Sleeve Recovery Look Like?

The gastric sleeve is a trusted weight loss surgery with proven results. A lot of questions will (and indeed, should) be asked before deciding to go through with it. One of these will be what exactly does recovery from gastric sleeve surgery look like? In this short blog we will explore what the typical gastric sleeve patient can expect in the days, weeks, and months leading on from their procedure. Whatever your own personal recovery looks like, it is essential that you make the correct lifestyle changes in order to make the most of your surgery.

The First Few Days

Typically in hospital for one night, patients can expect to be discharged the day after their surgery given that there were no complications. In these first few days, patients will be on a diet of water and fluids. For example, thin soup. Our experienced Bariatric Dietitian will help you understand your recovery diet.

The First Few Weeks

You will remain on a restricted diet of pureed foods. Again, our dietitian will help you to outline what you can and cannot eat. Depending on what you do for a living, you can expect to be back into work from 2 – 3 weeks.

The First Few Months

Full recovery typically takes place between 6 and 8 weeks. You will still need to be conscious of your diet and take supplements.

You may experience changes as your body reacts to the rapid weight loss in the first three to six months, including:

  • Body aches
  • Feeling tired, as if you have the flu
  • Feeling cold
  • Dry skin
  • Hair thinning and hair loss
  • Mood changes
