How Does the Gastric Sleeve Work?

The gastric sleeve is a relatively simple procedure that requires the removal of up to around 80% of the existing stomach, leaving behind a sleeve-like structure the shape of a banana and the thickness of a butchers sausage. Gastric sleeve patients typically lose up to 70% of their excess body weight as measured over a two year period. As you might expect, weight loss is initially rapid and then slows as your body adjusts to the new stomach. By reducing the production of ghrelin and heavily restricting the amount of food a patient will be able to consume at any one time, the gastric sleeve allows for a more comfortable weight loss experience when guidelines and medical advice are followed.
