The Importance of Gastric Balloon Aftercare

Gastric balloon aftercare is at the heart of operations at Allure Weightloss. Aftercare is key to our patients having the ability to lose weight sustainably alongside their weight loss devices. Both our team and our patients agree that the success of a gastric balloon hinges not just on the balloon itself, but on the habits and lifestyle changes that are made in the process.

That is where our aftercare programme really shines. Our team equip you with all the tools and knowledge to help you succeed in lowering body mass index (BMI) and losing weight.

Registered Dietitian

Alongside a gastric balloon placement or any Allure weight loss surgery, patients will receive the expertise of our HCPC registered dietitian. A gastric balloon is more of a tool than a solution, patients will need to work alongside it to ensure long-term changes take place.

Patients can expect to see significant weight loss while their balloon is in place, but in order to maintain a healthy weight once a gastric balloon has been removed, patients will need to make lifestyle changes.

In this respect, your dietitian will work to provide the necessary information relating to the calorific intake and diet, to help to reshape the way in which an individual approaches food. It is with this intervention that our patients see an average weight loss of between 10 -18% of their total weight.

Nurse Care

After your placement with your GMC registered consultant, you will be placed into the care of your nurse. The nurse will be able to oversee your recovery from the procedure, make sure all is going to plan, and that you are drinking enough water in those initial days! Your nurse will be there for you to discuss any concerns you may have and help to address any problems that may arise.

Weight Counselling

Portrait of Dr Mark Bruce

For those that feel as though they need a little extra support in the form of counselling, our very own Dr Mark Bruce is on hand. An optional extra, this service does come at an extra cost due to the specialism involved, however patients that have worked with him have always appreciated the time spent considering their relationship with food at a deeper level.

For many of our patients who may be struggling with comorbidities related to their prior weight, such as high blood pressure or heart disease, it is often not as simple as being able to change eating habits. Changing habits can be incredibly difficult for some people and mental health sometimes needs to be considered. It is for these patients that we would recommend weight counselling for extra support on their weight loss journey.

Our Gastric Balloon Programmes

There are two gastric balloon programmes available through Allure Weightloss, which include the 6 and 12 month gastric balloons. Both procedures come complete with our celebrated aftercare programme. There are several reasons why you may choose one balloon over the other, and our gastric balloon specialists will be able to answer any questions you may have. Interestingly, you may also want to know that 50% of any weight loss achieved will often occur within the first month, regardless of which balloon you might choose.

Whilst placement of the balloon is non-surgical and non-invasive, especially in comparison to traditional bariatric surgery such as a gastric bypass or gastric sleeve, it is important to remember that this is still a medical procedure – a dedicated aftercare pathway with registered professionals should be a deciding factor when considering a provider. Likewise, it is always good to consider the importance of choosing a CQC registered provider.
