What is a Gastric Balloon?
A gastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss procedure that involves the placement of a temporary device designed to sit in an area of the stomach called the fundus. Depending on the device that is chosen, a typical patient can experience total reduction of between 10 – 15% or 10 – 18% of their body weight on average. There are two distinct gastric balloon options with Allure, and they are the Allurion Balloon (4 months) and the Orbera 365 (12 months).
The Orbera 365 is an endoscopic gastric balloon, and is placed whilst the patient is under a light sedation. The procedure itself lasts around 20 – 30 minutes, and patients will be observed for 2 hours. Patients cannot drive for 24 hours post-procedure. As touched on, the Orbera can stay in the stomach for up to 12 months, but can be removed at any point prior. In this respect, the Orbera 365 is one of the more flexible gastric balloon options. Fully FDA approved, patients can expect to lose between 10 and 18% of their total body weight.
The Allurion Balloon differs mainly in terms of application. It initially comes in the form of a swallowable gastric balloon pill which the patient is encouraged to swallow. The placement itself takes around 20 minutes, after which the patient will be free to leave. The balloon will then stay in the stomach for around 16 weeks at which point it is designed to deflate and ‘pass naturally’. The Allurion Balloon is CE approved and comes with an average weight loss expectation of 10 – 15%.
Gastric Sleeve
A gastric sleeve, also known as the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is available from our Salford facility with Mr Javed Sultan. This popular form of bariatric surgery sees a reduction of the stomach of between 70 and 80% of its original size. Usually performed laparoscopically, the sleeve gastrectomy is an extremely successful treatment that typically sees a reduction of up to 70% of excess body weight of a patient over a 2 year period. Gastric Bypass
The Gastric Bypass is a procedure that can be performed even if somebody has had a gastric sleeve. A good way to think about the gastric bypass is a restructuring of the digestive system. Like the sleeve, a bypass requires the patient to adopt lifestyle changes in order to ensure safety and success of the treatment. Again, patients typically find up to a 70% reduction in excess weight loss over a 2 year period. A Gastric Bypass may still be and option if a patient has already had Gastric Sleeve surgery.
