Are You Experiencing a Plateau?

A weight loss plateau describes something commonly experienced by individuals everywhere. Those that aren’t prepared for it can easily fall into panic-mode, which is why we would like to spread awareness about weight loss plateaus, what they mean, and how to overcome them with confidence.

So, What Exactly is Meant by a Weight Loss Plateau?

To put it simply, a plateau is when an individual doesn’t lose any weight for a period of around 3 weeks. This is because in the first and second week your struggle with weight loss could be put down to water retention. So, you need to reach around three weeks of no weight loss (despite your best efforts) to be considered in a plateau.

What Should I Do?

There are some things that you should keep in mind when it comes to weight loss plateaus. The first is that they are EXTREMELY common. In fact, you should consider yourself lucky if you do not experience a plateau whilst trying to reach your weight loss goals. Some people can experience 2 to 3 plateaus before reaching their desired / healthy weight. Secondly is that losing weight becomes more difficult the closer you get to your goal and weight loss actually slows the more weight you lose. This, for obvious reasons, can be incredibly disheartening, especially if you aren’t aware of weight loss plateaus to begin with.

The most important thing you can do is recognise that this is a normal part of the weight loss process and this should help you not panic. The second most important thing to do would be to ask yourself if you are still taking all the right steps. If not, reassess your situation and make the appropriate adjustments. This may mean increasing physical activity and decreasing calorific intake. If you are already doing that then you should let yourself feel confident that this plateau will pass, and not allow any ill feelings to disrupt your path to a healthier and more confident self.

If you really are feeling the pressure, some proactive things you could do include: expanding your exercise routine, fill your day with more activity in general, and take a closer look at your calorific intake (if you are a patient of ours, our dietitian can help you with this).

Appreciate the Weight You’ve Lost so Far

Remember, weight loss is challenging. If it weren’t, everyone would be walking around in peak physical condition. Be realistic about your weight loss goals and the time you have given yourself to reach them and your journey should be a more relaxed and enjoyable one. Appreciate the weight you’ve lost and keep pushing.
