Bariatric Surgery Eligibility

Bariatric surgery, also called weight loss surgery, involves permanent changes to your digestive system in order to restrict food intake and result in lost weight. All of our weight loss surgeries can help with obesity-related medical conditions, such as type 1 and 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and more.

Gastric Sleeve

Gastric Sleeve surgical procedures remove 75-80% of your stomach, leaving a thin, tube-like structure to reduce the production of the hunger hormone. This is a permanent, long-term weight loss solution. The eligibility requirements are:

  • If your body mass index (BMI) is 35 or more and you’ve been struggling to lose weight even while maintaining a healthy lifestyle, this could be an option for you.
  • If you have a BMI above 30 and have existing comorbidities, such as sleep apnoea and diabetes, you may still be eligible for gastric sleeve surgery.
  • You must be fit for surgery and general anaesthetic to be considered for gastric sleeve surgery.

Gastric Bypass

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery creates a new structure out of the existing stomach, to create a stomach pouch. The procedure takes between 1-4 hours to perform and results in long-term success with a sustainable weight loss. The eligibility requirements are but not limited to:

  • You have a BMI of at least 35.
  • You’ve already attempted to lose weight via traditional methods, such as dieting and lifestyle changes.
  • You’re willing to have long-term follow-up appointments.
  • You’re willing to adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle.
  • You’re medically fit for surgery and anaesthesia.

Mini Gastric Bypass

The mini gastric bypass reduces the size of the available stomach, without removing anything, to restrict the intake of food into the stomach and reduce the production of ghrelin. On average, our patients experience up to 70% of excess weight loss within the first two years.

Gastric Balloon Eligibility

The gastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss tool that helps patients tackle hunger and make lasting, healthy, lifestyle changes. Gastric balloon placement will typically take between 20–30 minutes to perform and on average, our patients will lose between 10-15% of their total body weight. As your stomach adjusts to the balloon, you’ll be placed on a liquid diet before moving to soft foods. We’ll work with you for longer periods of time than most clinics, and will help you make lasting changes.

Allure Weightloss only offers gastric balloons that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the benchmark for safe and effective medical devices worldwide:

BiB Gastric Balloon
BiB 6 month gastric balloon

The FDA-approved BiB Gastric balloon can be kept in the stomach for up to six months, in which it will suppress your hunger and leave you feeling fuller for longer. You must have a BMI of between 30 and 50 for placement.
In addition, there are certain medical reasons for which you may not be eligible for treatment with the BiB System. These may include:

  • Previous history of gastric surgery, or a large hiatal hernia.
  • Unwillingness to adopt the dietary habits critical to the success of the therapy.
  • Drug or alcohol addiction.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Upper gastrointestinal bleeding conditions or congenital anomalies of the gastrointestinal tract.

Orbera Gastric Balloon
Obera 365 gastric balloon

The Orbera 365 is a soft silicone intra-gastric balloon that is temporarily inserted into the stomach for up to 12 months. It is also FDA-approved and is manufactured by the same company as the BiB balloon. It requires a minimum BMI of 30 and a maximum of 50 to place. There are certain medical reasons that may make you ineligible for treatment with the Orbera System, including:
