What is a Gastric Balloon?
A Weight Loss Balloon is a soft silicone balloon, which fits into your stomach. During the procedure, we insert the balloon into your stomach without surgery, through your mouth. We then fill it with sterile saline water through a tube. This fills the balloon, which then seals itself through a self-sealing valve. This inflated balloon then sits in your stomach for up to 12 months.months. As it occupies part of your stomach, your brain feels as if the stomach is full as a result of eating, and you do not feel as hungry as you might have done without the balloon.
What is the difference?
The difference between the different types of weight loss balloons is not as obvious as it seems. While they are fundamentally similar in design and purpose, Allurion 4 month balloons and Orbera 12 month weight loss balloons do have some differences.
4 Month – The Allurion 4 Month Weight Loss Balloon takes no more than 20 minutes to fit – often as little as 10 minutes without the need of an endoscopy The balloon then stays in your stomach for around 4 months, by which point it will have deflated, and passed out into the toilet.
12 Month – the Orbera 365 12 Month Weight Loss balloon takes a little longer to fit with an endoscopy, often being done within 20-30 minutes. However, you do then need to spend around an hour or two in observation. This balloon stays in your stomach for much longer to help you make those changes over a longer period of time.
Who is a 12 Month Balloon for?
A 12 month weight loss balloon is for people who have seriously struggled with their weight over a long period of time. It lasts long enough that you can start to get used to eating smaller portions. However, it also lasts long enough that you can start to deal with the lifestyle or psychological issues that may be the root cause of over-eating. A 4 or month balloon is suitable for people who need help losing weight – a 12 month weight loss balloon is more for people who need help changing their life – with weight loss as an element of that change.
