What You Should Know About Your Allurion Balloon Placement

An Allurion Balloon is a swallowable gastric balloon available in the UK. What we mean by swallowable is that it comes ready to place in a capsule around the size of a locket and attached to a catheter. The patient is expected to swallow the capsule in a procedure that takes in total around 20 – 30 minutes. Once swallowed the capsule will dissolve and an x-ray will be taken to confirm it is in the correct position. Then filling will begin. Once filled another x-ray will be taken, the catheter removed with a quick tug, and you will be on your way home. Allurion Balloons are CE approved. Allurion Balloon patients can expect a total body weight loss of 10 – 15% on average.

How Do Allurion Balloons Facilitate Weight Loss?

The Allurion Balloon is based off the typical gastric balloon model in that it enables weight loss by reducing the feelings of hunger. The device itself occupies around 60% of the stomach and in doing this delays gastric emptying and reduces the production of ghrelin (our hunger hormone). Combined, these allow patients a mental space to make the necessary long-term habit changes for maintained success. 50% of all weight loss occurs within the first month.

Initial Symptoms Associated with the Allurion Balloon

Patients can expect three days of what we refer to as initial symptoms once they’ve had the Allurion Balloon placed. These occur because your stomach is trying to break down the balloon and get rid of it. Initial symptoms are sickness, cramping, nausea, and potentially diarrhoea. It is important that patients prepare themselves for these symptoms, remain hydrated, and are prepared to take time off work while you adjust.

Allurion vs Orbera 365

Similar in function, these two devices differ mainly when it comes to application and length of placement. The Orbera 365 is the only gastric balloon FDA approved to stay in the stomach for up to 12 months and has an average total body weight loss of between 10 and 18%. Unlike the Allurion Balloon, the Orbera 365 12 month gastric balloon requires an endoscopy at placement and removal and removal can be arranged at any point within that 12 month period at no extra charge to the patient.

We have 13 (and counting) gastric balloon clinics across England and Wales. Find your nearest clinic online.

Surgical Alternatives to the Gastric Balloon

Allure Weightloss also provide bariatric surgeries to interested patients. These are drastically different to gastric balloons as they require an operation, significant down-time, and are by no means temporary. Our GMC registered consultant surgeons offer the gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and mini gastric bypass from three locations across England.

Aftercare

We don’t compete on price. We compete on the most important thing: with the level of care we provide our patients. Each procedure is accompanied by a dedicated and relevant aftercare service for maximum success.
