A gastric balloon is a fantastic weight loss tool designed to help patients feel fuller for longer so that they can make essential changes to their lifestyle and habits. All gastric balloons work in the same way: suppressing feelings of hunger by occupying around 60% of the stomach, delaying the digestive process of gastric emptying, and reducing the production of the hunger hormone known as ghrelin. The gastric balloon is designed to sit in an area of the stomach called the fundus, wherein it can effectively help implement the aforementioned hunger reducing properties. Gastric balloons are available in two distinct models with Allure, the four month Allurion Balloon and the FDA approved (up to) 12 month Orbera 365. The balloon you have placed may depend on a variety of factors, including your medical history and the length of time you believe you will need in order to effectively change your habits. The main difference is in the way the balloons are placed. The former comes in the form of a swallowable pill whilst the latter requires a simple endoscopic procedure. The balloons come with an average total body weight loss of between 10 – 15% and 10 – 18% respectively.
