Weight Loss Surgery Explored

Weight Loss Surgery (bariatric surgery) refers to a life changing procedure aimed at helping those struggling with obesity to lose weight and maintain weight loss. This can be achieved via several methods, but in this article we will explore the core surgeries that we offer her at Allure, surgeries that have a wealth of evidence-based reporting behind them.

The Gastric Sleeve

A gastric sleeve required the removal of up to 80% of the stomach and is performed laparoscopically. It typically requires the patient to stay overnight in our clinic before being discharged. Depending on the type of work you do, around two weeks should be taken off work, and you can expect a full recovery at around 6 to 8 weeks. The gastric sleeve is a highly successful bariatric procedure and is available to Allure patients with a BMI over 35 (eligibility criteria, of course, applies). A gastric sleeve will drastically reduce the size of your stomach, impacting various aspects of your digestion. Not only will you be limited to the amount of food you can eat, repressed production of the hunger hormone known as ghrelin means you’ll be left feeling fuller for longer. Patients can expect an average weight loss of around 70% of their excess weight as measured over a two year period.

The Gastric Bypass

The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass was developed in the ’60s and has since become the ‘Gold Standard’ of Bariatric Surgery. It is called this because of its long evidence-based history of success and is the favoured bariatric procedure of many consultant surgeons. The procedure involves redirecting the existing ‘plumbing’ of the stomach, creating a new ‘stomach pouch’. The gastric bypass is malabsorptive as well as restrictive, meaning your body will find it harder to take in nutrients. It will also reduce the production of ghrelin in the body. Just like the sleeve, you will need to take vitamins daily for life in order to keep yourself healthy. Our care team will help walk you through this. More recently, there has been the development of the mini gastric bypass, also known as the single anastomosis bypass as it only involves one surgical join instead of two.

Essential Aftercare

At every step, we put patients first. That’s why we offer anybody who has a procedure with us a comprehensive aftercare service completed by nurse and dietetic care with experienced, trained, and registered professionals. Non-Surgical Medical Weight Loss

Gastric balloons are non-surgical medical weight loss option for those that aren’t looking for a bariatric procedure like the sleeve or bypass. These balloons are temporarily inserted to help you suppress feelings of hunger as you make essential habit changes for long-term success. They work by occupying 60% of the stomach, delaying the process of gastric emptying into the small intestine, and reduce the production of our hunger hormone known as ghrelin.

We offer two distinct types of gastric balloons to our patients in the UK. This includes the 12 month Orbera 365, and the 4 month Gastric Balloon. Both balloons function in the same way, with differences occurring mainly in their placement and removal. The Gastric Balloon is notably ‘swallowable’ and comes in the form of a capsule attached to a catheter. When with one of our consultants you will be encouraged to swallow the capsule in a quick 20 minute procedure, during which you will have two x-rays – one to confirm position and the second to confirm correct inflation has been achieved. At around 16 weeks the balloon is designed to deflate and pass naturally through the body. Gastric patients can expect, on average, to lose around 10 – 15% of their total body weight during placement. The Orbera is a longer-term balloon that is FDA approved to be removed at any point within a 12 month period, meaning patients typically feel as though they have greater flexibility and control over the duration in which the balloon is in situ. The placement and removal process requires a quick 20 – 30 minute endoscopic procedure, which you will be lightly sedated for. Patients can expect an average weight loss of between 10 and 18% although many of our patients have done better. All placements come with our excellent aftercare package as standard.
