The Allurion Elipse Balloon Explained

What is the Allurion Elipse Balloon?

The Allurion Ellipse Balloon, more recently known as simply the Allurion Balloon, is a medical weight loss device that is placed in the stomach for around 16 weeks until it naturally deflates and passes through the body. You must have a BMI of at least 27 to be eligible. With the Allurion Balloon, patients lose 10 – 15% of their body weight on average. Alongside the Allurion Balloon, you will receive aftercare from our Bariatric Nurses and Dietitians.

How Does it Work?

Firstly, you will swallow the Allurion gastric balloon bill, which is attached to a catheter. Once in your stomach, the balloon will be filled with 550ml of saline, taking up a significant proportion of available space. It will then be detached from the catheter. Once in place you will feel fuller for longer, helping you to make the required lifestyle and dietary changes to really impact your weight loss.

It is important that patients understand this is a state of the art weight loss tool, not a solution within itself, and you will need to consciously work with the balloon. Alongside the balloon, you will be supported by a HCPC registered Dietitian as standard, with the optional extra of sessions with our Weight Counsellor, Dr Mark Bruce.

Non-Surgical Weight Loss

The Allurion Elipse Balloon is a non-surgical weight loss tool designed to support your weight loss across the 16 weeks. It functions much in the same way as other long-term weight loss balloons, in that it helps you feel fuller for longer. The benefit of gastric balloons is that you won’t have to experience the recovery time of bariatric surgery or stay over night in a clinic. The Allurion Elipse Balloon doesn’t even require an endoscopy!

What are the Alternatives?

The alternatives available through Allure Weightloss are as follows:

  • The Orbera 365 12 month gastric balloon. This balloon is placed endoscopically and under anaesthetic. During the 12 month gastric balloon placement, you will be supported by a HCPC registered Dietitian to ensure you have the best possible chance of keeping the weight off even without the balloon.
  • The BiB 6 month gastric balloon. Just like the Orbera, the BiB is placed endoscopically and under anaesthetic. During the 6 month gastric balloon placement, you will also be supported by HCPC registered Dietitians.
