The 4 and 12 month gastric balloons are available through specialist Allure Weightloss Clinics and are placed by GMC registered Consultants, each handpicked for their experience, talent, and dedication to providing patients with the results they deserve. Each intragastric balloon differs slightly from the other, and some more-so than others. The way that they differ can range from duration of placement to how the balloon is placed. What remains the same is the overall mission associated with placement: weight loss.
The 12 Month Gastric Balloon

Otherwise known as the Orbera 365, 12 month gastric balloons can stay in the stomach for up to 12 months. Just like the six month balloon, the Orbera 365 requires an endoscopy for placement and removal, making the choosing the duration of placement that little more flexible for the patient. The endoscopy itself lasts around twenty to thirty minutes, wherein the patient will be put under a light sedation for comfort.
The Orbera 365 requires a minimum BMI of 30, is FDA approved and CE approved. The Orbera has an upper BMI limit of 50.
The Allurion Balloon

The 4 month gastric balloon, otherwise known as the Allurion Balloon, is famously swallowable, and has been featured on a variety of national media outlets, such as the BBC. All in all, the Allurion Balloon is a temporary, short-term gastric balloon designed to be placed without the need for an endoscopy. A patient merely swallows a capsule and once the balloon is sitting in the fundus it is inflated. After around 16 weeks, the balloon is then designed to deflate and pass ‘naturally’ through the digestive tract.
As with all gastric balloons, initial post-placement symptoms will occur. These include cramping, nausea, and the potential for sickness and diarrhoea. This is true for both the Allurion Balloons and 12 month gastric balloons.
The Allurion Balloon demands a minimum BMI of at least 27, is CE approved and awaiting FDA approval. The Allurion Balloon has no upper BMI limit.

It is essential that patients work with the dietitian in order to to develop those necessary habit changes for long-term success. Gastric balloons should be seen, after all, as a temporary weight loss tool.
Alternatives to Bariatric Surgery
A gastric balloon placement may be suitable for those that are not eligible for, or are not ready for, bariatric surgery such as the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. As the latter two are permanent, the gastric balloon often entices those looking for a temporary and non-surgical route through medical weight loss. Those looking for bariatric surgery require a minimum BMI of 35. Not sure what your BMI is? Use the official NHS BMI calculator.
