If you’re looking to reduce feelings of hunger so that you can make effective lifestyle changes for weight loss, a gastric balloon may be the answer. By occupying 60% of the stomach, delaying gastric emptying, and reducing production of the hunger hormone known as ghrelin, gastric balloons have proven a fantastic tool for weight loss. Our patients routinely praise their experiences, which you can find here.
Placed in a quick 15 – 30 minute procedure, gastric balloons are a wonderful tool that have a longer history than you may think. Utilised by patients for around 20 years, the Orbera 365 gastric balloon has been FDA approved. This means that the Orbera can be in situ for up to 12 months and removal can be arranged at any time, making it an extremely flexible option for those that believe they may want it out earlier.

The Differences Between Gastric Balloons

There are two distinct gastric balloon options that we offer at Allure. These are the swallowable gastric balloon (Allurion) and the endoscopic gastric balloon (Orbera 365). Both the balloons function in the capacity that they are designed to reduce feelings of hunger by occupying 60% of the stomach, delaying gastric emptying, and suppressing reduction of the hunger hormone known as ghrelin. Patients can typically expect to lose 10 – 15% and 10 – 18% respectively, but patients such as Sarah have been known to lose up to 23% of their total body weight!
The main differences lie in the amount of time that the balloons can be placed and how it is that the balloons are placed and then removed. The Allurion Balloon is famously swallowable, coming in the form of a capsule around the size of a locket sweet. After around 16 weeks the Allurion Balloon is designed to deflate and pass naturally. The Orbera 365 is FDA approved and can stay in the stomach for up to 12 months. It requires a simple endoscopy at placement and removal.
