An Orbera 365 patient has the additional flexibility of being able to arrange removal of the balloon (at no extra cost, I should add) at any point prior to the 12 month cut off should they so wish. Those that go the full term report that they enjoy the support the balloon provides them. Every gastric balloon works in the same way – they are designed to reduce feelings of hunger by occupying 60% of the stomach, delaying gastric emptying, and suppressing production of the hunger hormone known as ghrelin. The Orbera 365 is placed via a simple endoscopic procedure, accompanied by a light sedation to keep you comfortable. Orbera patients must have a minimum BMI of at least 30 for placement.
The Allurion gastric balloon is a great option for those that believe 16 weeks is enough time for them to implement effective habit changes. The Allurion Balloon comes in the form of a swallowable pill and is designed to deflate at around 16 weeks, at which point it will pass naturally. Allurion Balloon patients typically lose between 10 – 15% of their total body weight on average. Allurion patients must have a minimum BMI of at least 27 for placement.
