Why is the Gastric Bypass Called the ‘Gold Standard’?

Bariatric surgery can take many forms, with perhaps not many as famous as the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. This is because the Roux-en-Y is the oldest and most studied form of bariatric surgery, being trusted by consultant bariatric surgeons and patients across the globe to deliver results. Typically speaking, a gastric bypass patient can expect a reduction of around 60 – 80% of their excess body weight as measured over a two year period.

The surgery itself involves a radical reorganisation of your stomach as the surgeon creates a new ‘gastric pouch’ that will operate as your new stomach. They will then pull a section of small intestine and attach it directly to your new pouch. The original stomach with then be re-joined to the small intestines, allowing your stomach acids to meet the digested foods and continue to help in the process. This is distinctly different from the gastric sleeve which involves removal of up to around 80% of the stomach.

The Mini Gastric Bypass

The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass should not be mistaken with its modern alternative, the mini gastric bypass. So called ‘mini’ not because it is in any way ‘less’ of a surgery or creating a smaller pouch, but because of the number of joins (also known as anastomosis) required. In medical circles the mini gastric bypass is referred to as the single anastomosis bypass. This procedure is very similar to its traditional counterpart, but it is important to remember your eligibility may vary from surgery to surgery and thus it is best to discuss your options thoroughly with our consultant.
