From the Allurion Balloon to the Orbera 365, the world of gastric balloons is relatively new, but not as new as one might expect. Whilst the Allurion Balloon was developed in the last few years, the Orbera 365 has been around for decades. Both balloons have a fantastic track record when it comes to supporting weight loss, especially when accompanied by registered dietitians.
How Does the Allurion Balloon Work?
Described as elegant by our Dr John Mason, the Allurion Balloon is famously swallowable. This particular gastric balloon comes in the form of a capsule about the size of a locket. This capsule is attached to a catheter. The doctor at your local clinic will inflate the Allurion Balloon capsule, once swallowed. Once in place, you will be free to go home. Your balloon will suppress the hunger hormone ghrelin as it takes up around 60% of your stomach, leaving you to feel fuller for longer, with more mental space to make those necessary lifestyle changes for long-term success.
The Orbera 365
The Orbera 365 stays in the stomach for up to 12 months, giving patients more time to correct unhealthy habits. This procedure requires both an endoscopy and sedation on placement and removal, making your stay at the clinic roughly 2 and half hours in total (the procedure itself only takes 20 minutes, the rest of the time is for observation). You will not be able to drive immediately after the procedure.
The health benefits of the Allurion Balloon and Orbera 365, along with a reduction in overall bodyweight, also include a reduction in the comorbidities that are associated with obesity. These come in many forms such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and mobility issues. Relieving the stress that excess weight is putting on your body may also relieve the risk of these associated / attributed ailments.
