How do Gastric Balloons Work?
A gastric balloon works by occupying 60% of the stomach, delaying gastric emptying, and reducing production of the hunger hormone known as ghrelin. Gastric balloon patients can expect to lose an average of between 10 – 15% with the Allurion Balloon and 10 – 18% with the Orbera 365. At the end of placement the balloon will either deflate and ‘pass naturally’ at around 16 weeks (in the case of Allurion), or require an endoscopy for removal at a maximum timeframe of 12 months in the case of an Orbera 365 placement.
What is the Difference Between the Gastric Balloons?
The main difference between the gastric balloons is the way in which they are placed, but also the length of time in which they can stay in place for. The Allurion Balloon requires a glass of water and two x-rays as you swallow a capsule roughly the size of a lozengier. This takes around 20 minutes, after which you will be free to go. As already mentioned, the Allurion Balloon can stay in the stomach for around 16 weeks at which point it is designed to deflate and pass naturally. The Orbera 365, on the other hand, is FDA approved for placement up to 12 months. Even though it is commonly referred to as the 12 month gastric balloon, a patient can arrange to have it out at any point before then should they feel comfortable with their progress. Each balloon placement comes with a celebrated Aftercare Package as standard.
