Also known as the accordion procedure, the Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is a restrictive medical weight loss procedure. As the name suggests, the procedure is performed endoscopically with a specially designed suturing device. The ESG is suitable for individuals that have a BMI of 30 and above, and remove the risk of leaking and bleeding that come with traditional bariatric surgeries. However, it is important for patients to keep in mind that the ESG procedure is still permanent (unlike the gastric balloon). Our highly-trained and experienced consultants help to guide patients through their decision and ensure they are eligible and prepared for the procedure.

Reducing the size of the stomach by effectively folding it into itself, the Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty restricts the amount a patient can eat. With this method, the size of the stomach will be effectively reduced by up to 80% of its original size. The ESG achieves this through an endoscopic system of folding and suturing the stomach. By doing this, patients will feel full sooner, leaving more mental space to make the necessary dietary and lifestyle changes. The ESG is a permanent medical weight loss procedure.
It is because of the above that the ESG has been known to resemble the gastric sleeve, specifically in function, however there are several key differences. The most important of which include the fact that an ESG does not require any surgical incisions, or require the need to amputate the greater curvature of the stomach, thus making it less invasive. Patients can expect to achieve 45% EWL at around 20 months.
You may not be eligible for an ESG if you are pregnant, have gastric ulcers, or have hiatal hernias longer than 5cm.
