Could a Gastric Balloon Benefit You?

patient experiencing a weight loss plateau meditating by the sea

If you are looking for help losing weight and wouldn’t like to go down the surgical route, a gastric balloon may be perfect for you. Designed to sit in an area of the stomach called the fundus, a gastric balloon encourages weight loss by delaying gastric emptying, occupying 60% of the stomach, and suppressing the hunger hormone known as ghrelin. By doing this the patient feels fuller for longer, meaning they are able to make the necessary long-term habit changes that facilitate maintained success. For example, by working with the Allure Dietitian, patients work to make substantial changes to the way they approach mealtimes.

Losing weight has many health benefits as it helps to tackle the myriad of comorbidities associated with obesity. These include, but are not limited to, sleep apnoea, type 2 diabetes, joint pain, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Losing weight can have a huge impact on ones life and are not limited to physical elements but also to our emotional wellbeing.

The Orbera 365

The Orbera 365 is commonly referred to as the 12 month gastric balloon, FDA approved for placement in the stomach for up to 12 months. Often regarded as one of our most flexible options, a patient may have the Orbera 365 removed at any point within those 12 months at no extra cost to them. The typical average weight loss of someone who has undergone an Orbera 365 gastric balloon placement is between 10 and 18% of their total body weight. The Orbera 365 requires an endoscopy and light sedation at placement and removal. The Orbera 365 is a medical weight loss option that’s considered a good alternative to more permanent procedures such as the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass.

The Allurion Balloon

Th Allurion Balloon is also known as the swallowable gastric balloon. Famed for coming in the form of a swallowable capsule, this balloon takes around 20 minutes to place and is designed to deflate and pass naturally at around 16 weeks. This is a great option for those that want to avoid the sedation and endoscopy required for Orbera 365 placements. Allurion Balloon placements see an average weight loss of between 10 and 15%.
